Why can't all followers of Jesus just come together around scripture?

So really, if I want to fight like a boss, like Jesus, I need to chose my words like Jesus did, quoting scriptures to the enemy. Pulling out the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God.Now here's where those pesky distractions come y'all, at least for me. In order to swing the sword, I must train. Not only do I need military training and discipline to fight distractions, but my kids need to learn to fight with scripture too.

Spiritual Disciplines- Reading and Memorizing Scripture

I love that Jesus fought Satan with scripture while He was being tempted in the desert.  There He was…weakened and hungry,  and the only thing He spoke, besides “No” and “Get out of here!” were  “It is written…” followed by  a scripture.    See Matthew 4

So really, if I want to fight like Jesus, I need to chose my words like Jesus did, quoting scriptures to the enemy, pulling out the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God.

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,  and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.  In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:13-17 NLT

Now here’s where those pesky distractions come y’all, at least for me.  In order to swing the sword, I must train.  Not only do I need military training and discipline to fight distractions, but my kids need to learn to fight with scripture too.  There are three ways to handle the Word of God:  you can read it, study it, and memorize it.

Read

Reading scripture is not all that hard.  Instead of checking Facebook during the many times I am required to wait in the course of my day, I like to use the app from Gateway.com to read the Word on my phone. One idea is to read the same section of scripture each day for a week, listening to the Spirit target specific areas of your life.  I guarantee the Spirit will help you use this same passage on behalf of a friend, while you use your voice to speak a counter attack against the enemy. This idea is great to use with your children too.  The strategy of repetition infuses the Word into your mind and heart so it can be pulled up and spoken at a moment’s notice.

Study

Studying the Word is more than just reading it, but might include doing research, thinking about context, embracing the figurative language, word study, cross reference, and relating your experiences.    Study is digging deeper.  Study is lingering in the Word.  I love to participate in Bible study groups, but I also wanted to learn to study on my own, so  I developed a Bible study guide for myself that I would love to share with you.

The Deeper Study Guide is meant to be stapled on the front of a composition book. Look at the end of this post to find out how to get one for your personal study.

Memorize

To a brain on overload, sometimes it just can’t seem to hold anything else.  That’s what the enemy wants you to think.  Shove the trivial to the side and make room for POWER.  Because that’s what God’s Word is.  A sharp sword.  So sharp it can slice the head off of your enemy with one swipe.  So sharp it can surgically remove that dark stronghold that clings.  So sharp it can expose that which is hiding, maybe even from the one who wields it.  A sword is no good if it can’t be drawn quickly.  By the time you have accessed your Bible app, or Googled a verse, the perfect moment may have passed.

One of the first scriptures I memorized was Philippians 4:4-7.  On a bumpy flight this fall, I sat next to a woman who was outwardly expressing everything I was feeling on the inside…terror.  I comforted her by reciting my memory verse, “Do not be anxious about anything…”  Not only did it calm her, but it did me also.

In conclusion, I want to offer one last reason why you should be in the Word.

For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.  They will reject the truth and chase after myths.  2 Timothy 4:3-4 NLT

How I Found a Space to Pray in my Small House

I want to show you how I found a space to pray in my small house after watching The War Room. Free printables of the prayer banner, labels, and prayer cards that I use in my time with God are included.

Spiritual Disciplines Series:  Prayer

Before I saw The War Room, my prayer list was located on spiral note cards.  It never occurred to me to do my praying in a closet as was done in the movie, even though Jesus makes this suggestion in Matthew 6:6 NLT

But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

I became convinced that I needed a place in my home to pray, away from the family.  I liked the idea of posting my prayers in a permanent location.  My closet was too tiny, or maybe I should say, it was too full, so I looked at the back of my closet door as a better way for me to utilize the space I had available.

Step 1:  I painted the back of the door a fun turquoise color.

Step 2:   I went to Hobby Lobby with a sample of my paint so I could coordinate colors of the paper I would use for the banner, labels, pockets, and the center board that I use for immediate needs.  The paper I picked had different patterns on each side.  I alternated patterns when making the pockets in step 5.

Step:  3  I assembled the center board using:  hot glue, glue stick, twine, a chip board, coordinating paper made of card stock, and tiny clothespins.  Using the glue stick, I attached the card stock to the chip board.  Then I used hot glue to attach the twine to the back while it crossed in various locations on the front.  I found a cute burlap flower to add on the top.  The chip board has holes on back for use in securing to the door.

Next, I created a PRAYING banner.  Since the paper I picked out was too big for my printer, I cut it to the right size , then used the scraps for the Immediate Needs board.  I attached the banner with twine and used duct tape on the top of the door so the new paint wouldn’t be ruined.

Then, I printed labels and scripture cards and created pockets out of matching paper.  To create the pockets I folded the paper over and left about half an inch on the top (see picture).  I glued the scriptures and titles on the front of each pockets, then laminated.

Pockets

The last step was to type up the list of people to fit into each category then place them in the pockets, ready to go.      Once complete, I positioned my chair next to the door, to make sure I arranged each item low enough for me to see.  I used the product Simply Tacky to attach everything. Next week I will write more about what I do during my prayer time.

All my praying is integrated with worship music that I have saved on my Pinterest page.

Blessings, Alice

It is important to know that Jesus is not a genie ready to deliver hearts and rainbows just because I rubbed the lamp. Look y'all, if you are like me, and I'm betting you are, you spend most of your time in prayer presenting your requests. Here are some ideas to make your prayer time into more of a partnership...more of a love fest...more of an expression of trust.

Five Ways to Protect Against the Surprise of Evil

I will come right out and say it, Evil is scary. My good friend and her family live in another country.  Evil surprised her last week, really dark forces kind of evil that involved the love of money and guns.  The bad guys were foiled by the good guys and all ended well, but afterwards the breeze of that narrow escape blows across the heart, and chills the soul.

If you read my blog about the day my father was murdered you will know that I have experience with evil surprises.  Look y’all, you can’t just go around in panic mode, waiting for something bad to happen.  Looking around every corner, bracing yourself for the bogyman to startle you  That’s called anxiety, and you were not meant to live like that.  God wants you full of His peace.

To be honest y’all, I struggle with this one.  Here are five ways scripture tells us to protect from the surprise of evil.

Pray.

Christ showed His disciples how to pray in Matthew 6.

This one line from the Lord’s prayer is a weapon against the unseen forces that swoop in to kill you daily.  And yes, you are being stalked.  You are prey.  Walking alone without the deliverer is not smart. He is the one who fights, He is the one who protects, He is the one who yanks you out of the way when the attack comes.  Deliver me from the evil one in the name of Jesus.

Be Alert.

Alertness is different than nervousness.  Alertness suggests being aware of your surroundings.   Watching, listening…ready to snap into Spiritual action when you hear the lion leap.  And he will leap.

Use Your Sword.

We are only given one offensive weapon in the armor Paul describes in Ephesians 6.  The sword of God’s word.  The scriptures.  The very thing Jesus used against Satan when He was being tempted.  He whipped out His Sword and made quick work of the enemy.

Gather an Army.

In a battle, wouldn’t you rather face the enemy with a whole bunch of people wielding swords, carrying shields, and lifting their voices in a war shout?  Cultivate your companions.  Diligently search for people who are dedicated to Jesus.  Y’all, this is me being blunt…Friends who never even say Jesus’ name out loud around you are useless in a battle.  I’m just saying…

+++++

Speak out loud to the enemy in the name of Jesus.

Do you believe Satan can read your mind?  I don’t.   Force him to hear the name of Jesus spoken out loud.  Subject him to the power of the Holy Spirit pushing Him back as you breathe out the word of God, as you tell him to leave you alone.
